Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) is a mental health and learning disability services provider in the North of England. It serves the populations of County Durham, Darlington, Teesside, North Yorkshire, York, and Selby.
TEWV supports thousands of individuals each year, offering a range of services including prevention, crisis care, and specialist support. Last year, the Trust provided care for over 210,000 patients, focusing on improving mental health and wellbeing across its diverse communities.
At any Trust, implementing PLICS (Patient-Level Information and Costing System) presents significant challenges, particularly in ensuring it holds a strategic position within the organisation.
Trusts must overcome technical and cultural barriers, such as integrating PLICS with existing systems, addressing data quality issues, and ensuring consistent engagement with staff across different service areas.
Additionally, limited resources and time constraints can hinder the ability to dedicate sufficient focus to this initiative.
For PLICS to be effective, it needs to be viewed not just as a financial tool but as a core part of the Trust’s decision-making process, requiring board-level support and cross-departmental collaboration to drive meaningful change and improve patient outcomes.
TEWV chose to complete the Plixology Canvas to gain a clearer understanding of its costing processes and identify opportunities for improvement. By leveraging the canvas report and associated toolkit, the Trust aims to optimise resource allocation, enhance service delivery, and align its financial strategy with its overarching goals of improving patient care and sustainability.
“The Plixology Canvas, developed by CareCosting, has provided Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust with valuable insights into our costing processes and resource management. It has helped us identify areas for improvement in several areas, whilst highlighting how we could support more informed decision-making regarding the allocation of resources to enhance both financial and patient outcomes.
The canvas has clarified some operational challenges, including task allocation and engagement with costing data. CareCosting’s direction throughout the process has enabled us to take a more strategic approach to our costing function, and how it can align with our broader organisational goals. This tool has been helpful in improving communication around costing, financial decisions and the impact on service delivery.”
